WELCOME TO NOTEMAKER 1.1.3

A database application for those who love making and managing notes

Home: Welcome

WHAT NOTEMAKER CAN DO FOR YOU

NoteMaker helps, allows or enables you to:

  1. write, store, search and manage thousands of notes in the one file;

  2. group notes under collection labels (categories);

  3. link one note directly to another;

  4. create keywords for NoteMaker to search in notes and then list them next to each note when found;

  5. transform abbreviations (eg, "wsj" to "The Wall Street Journal");

  6. make notes extensible with a reorderable numbered list, a storyboard and two preset tables;

  7. earmark some notes as special;

  8. write effective summaries with scaffolding provided (especially useful for students);

  9.  use a non-visual calendar for birthdays, due dates and the like

  10. access a manual, About NoteMaker, that may explain how to use the more difficult features.

Here is where the action takes place.

The workflow is as simple as 1, 2, 3:

  1. write the heading or contextual statement for the note (then press Tab);

  2. write a collection label (then press Tab);

  3. write the note.

Done!

Each note packs a lot of features.

The column of popover buttons on the far left makes each note extensible. For example, you may wish to storyboard the content of a short note, say, about the birth and death of stars. Storyboards are great for visualising cycles and timelines.

The huge blank rectangle next to the column of extensible features will list the headings (or contextual statements) of your notes.

Notice along the top bar the database attributes of NoteMaker. It makes it clear that each note is equal to one record in the database.

Clicking the Set due date button will make the note an event-note (a calendar item).

Finally, notice the crossword-like assortment of buttons ... these give you instant formatting tools, without the need to waste a click on a menu.

Here is a distraction free environment for editing your note. What also may help is the larger text size, yet can fit many more characters (in view) than its counterpart on the home page.
The Scan button will run along the content of the Note field and single out some basic incongruencies such as there being more opening parentheses than closing parentheses and will automatically capitalise first words of a sentence.
Should you wish to add endnotes (eg, for source references) ... this can only be done on the Note-Focus card.

LIMITATIONS

NoteMaker comes with some limitations:

  • suitable for only laptops and desktops, not for mobile phones, tablets, not cloud-based;

  • not scalable, but will fit 16:9, 16:10 and 3:2 screen aspect ratios;

  • developed solely in Windows, but should be okay with Macs;

  • dates are in Australian/British format (day/month/year);

  • though NoteMaker attempts to simulate some word-processing features, it is not a word processor*;

  • unlike most note-writing software, NoteMaker takes on a purely database approach to note-making.

* An important note for student users of NoteMaker. NoteMaker should never be seen as a replacement for a word processor such as Word, Pages, WordPerfect or Scrivener. (For example, even though NoteMaker has an endnote facility, it is an awkward facility compared to that offered by word processors). A helpful perspective on NoteMaker is to see it as merely a storage of bits and pieces of information that may act as background material for, or as preliminary to, an essay or assignment, before beginning the first draft in a word processor.

IT'S FREE, BUT ...

... NoteMaker requires a preinstalled copy of FileMaker Pro version 18 or 19 to open it and make it operational.

(Please note: NoteMaker will not be fully functional and will behave erratically with FileMaker in versions less than 18).

Please do not purchase FileMaker simply in order to use NoteMaker: FileMaker is very expensive.

The offer is only for those who already have a copy of FileMaker installed.

(Important side notice: there is no commercial or financial arrangement, or a commission-based relationship, between NoteMaker and Claris, owners of the FileMaker development platform).
